Designer Junya Kawakami spent most of his twenties in San Francisco, where he was influenced by the free-spirited strength of the people of various races he encountered while visiting second-hand clothing warehouses.
After returning to Japan, he began to express himself little by little based on his experiences there, dismantling and reconstructing old clothes, and incorporating the free-spirited personalities of the people he met at the time into his designs, which eventually became established as <SEVEN BY SEVEN> (the nickname for the area).
The loose, casual style is a San Francisco ethos, and the toughness of workwear also has a rustic beauty.
