Designer Junya Kawakami spent most of his twenties in San Francisco, where he was influenced by the free-spirited strength of the people of various races he encountered while visiting second-hand clothing warehouses.
After returning to Japan, he began to express himself little by little based on his experiences there. His designs, which involved dismantling and reconstructing old clothes and incorporating the free-spirited personalities of the people he met at the time, eventually became established as <SEVEN BY SEVEN> (the nickname for the area).
The loose, casual style is a San Francisco ethos, and the toughness of workwear also has a rustic beauty.
